More Than Just Wooden Toys For Children
While Punky Doodlebugs now offers kid wooden toys along with varous other products, the story of Punky Doodlebugs starts in the early 90's and wasn't just about kid wooden toys. Online services continue to grow, but we're proud of our story and of our store. Please take some time to read about our transformation from just a lactation program service to a full-service store with wooden toys for children and more!
Victoria Ackerman, RN, IBCLC established the first lactation program in SW Washington in 1992. In 1999, as the need for lactation support increased, she began a home delivery service for breast pump sales and rentals.
With the addition of in-home lactation consultations, even more mothers were assisted with their breastfeeding goals. In December of 2002, the mobile business of breastfeeding support put down little roots as a tiny storefront in the southeast area of Vancouver. Known by the name of “Motherway”, the little shop quickly outgrew its location.
Moving to a new site with a new name and an expanded line of women’s health products, baby needs, gifts like kid wooden toys and supplies for the new mother, “With Child-Maternity and Nursing Supplies” joined with Ackerman’s LifeWear at SE 123rd Ave. and Mill Plain Blvd. in Vancouver.
By April of 2007, Ackerman’s LifeWear was put to rest and “With Child” joined with Punky Doodlebugs in a big, beautiful new store in the Salmon Creek area of Vancouver.
The Lactation Clinic and everything that was so wonderful about “With Child” lives on at Punky Doodlebugs. The happy sounds of folks, tiny and not-so-tiny, exploring the wonderful wooden toys, books, boutique gifts and mommy must-haves, mingle with the precious sounds of new babies as they are carried and cuddled by proud parents comforted by the support and guidance found in the private lactation consultation clinic.
So just as Shakespeare wrote, “A rose by any other name is still a rose”, Motherway/With Child/Punky Doodlebugs is still a sweet spot of surprise to all who visit. Come play with us!
